Mystery Angel
~
Paragraph summary: They show a very emotional, beautiful side to Erik, as he sings about his Angel while he holds the rose and seems to sing to it at times. Clues show it is Erik there, but that Phantom is about to interfere—then we see evidence that he has…
I just have to say one thing first—this deleted scene grabs my heart. It is my favorite scene of Erik, except DOM. I love all the scenes with him—especially PONR and MOTN—but I find that I like him better unmasked—his true self—and I really like him here, because we can see into his heart and see part of that true self…
In companion book, before the screenplay starts, they made a point to write: “Scene numbers are consecutive. Where numbers have been missed out scenes have been omitted from the final film edit. Scenes remain in the correct order.”
But they’re not in the correct order, and at one point only, they are not consecutive. I feel this was a way to make it a little harder for us to figure things out...
The end of M. Giry’s tale is on page 117, scene # 155. The next scene it shows on that page is scene # 166. But they did not skip or omit scenes as they said above—NOWL was a deleted scene, and it’s there in the book. . because on page 125, we find scene # 155A. & 155B. So they did put it out of order…
Since that would be the correct scene order—to put scenes # 155 A & B after M. Giry’s tale--I am doing the summary of those two scenes at this point. When that happens, a clue is shown that answers a question that has troubled some.
We see Erik crouching by the lake, and as he sings this first part, he runs a hand through the water. The white mist on the lake is heavy and thick...the last we saw of him was at the masquerade ball when he and Christine had that 30 second eye-contact going between them, and this is the song they played:
ERIK: "No one would listen
No one but her
Heard as the outcast hears."
Makes it seems she is also an outcast
ERIK: "Shamed into solitude
Shunned by the multitude
I learned to listen"
The mist has begun to clear, but as he sings this last part, it fully clears and he is seen well. In The Mirror scene, when Christine sang, “Angel I hear you, speak I listen”—on the word “listen” a flash of light showed on the wall beside her. Perhaps this shows that they both made a connection by listening. Or a clue to the viewer to “listen.” As the man/woman who cups ear in POTO intro does, and something else they show in later scene has to do with a clue to listen…

ERIK: "In my dark, my heart heard music."
I feel this happened when he was a boy in the cage, too. Even while he was in darkness, his heart—or spirit—heard music because it is a part of who he is. He stands to his feet and walks to other part of lair.
ERIK: "I longed to teach the world
Rise up and reach the world
No one would listen
I alone could feel the music"
His words show that he wanted to sing out to the world and touch them with his gift, to reach them, to TEACH them—He alone could feel the music because he is the spirit of music, the heart of it; and now Christine is also music as previous clues and upcoming ones show. He, as king of it, made her into a part of himself, intending that she would become his queen. He looks past a candle toward what they soon show are drawings of Christine.
ERIK: "Then at last, a voice in the gloom"
They show many drawings of Christine covering the wall.
ERIK: "Seemed to cry "I hear you;
I hear your fears,
Your torment and your tears."
That he’s looking at the pictures of Christine and even takes one in his hand makes it obvious this is all about her.
They show a bust that reminds me very much of the Emperor Nero, and it has a white half mask on right side. When we first see it, it appears to be facing lake—but in next shot, seconds later, it seems to have turned and is looking at Erik. The expression now seems sad, and the mask has slipped. The first pic shows a beard—the second doesn’t. I’m not even sure it’s the same bust, but there is only one along that wall as the long shot showed. (The one on the organ also seemed to change earlier in movie—the hair was different in STYDI, etc..)

There are two gold monstrances, empty (he is without the presence of God at this point—in darkness, and he calls his lair “hell.”. From other "2" clues, I think "2" is symbolic of Erik/Phantom.) On the wall is a paper with green, red, and blue drawings of symbols. A small statue faces left and its wearing a Robin-hood type peaked hat. There is what looks like a copper teakettle (urn?) Also a gold statue with a black face and its left arm lifted, showing that this is all Erik here.
As he’s walking, they show a much clearer view of the candlestick with a full blazing sun and the bottom of a crescent moon lying inside the sun—which, as one of our sleuthers found out from an expert in his field, symbolizes a man and woman in unity—meaning they are “one.” (Unlike Raoul’s crest of rising sun with line between bottom of crescent moon, which expert said symbolizes a young immature man trying to dominate a woman—but not succeeding.) We believe the moon is Christine and the full mature sun is Erik—showing that they are one--and another clue that they will always be together.

ERIK: "She saw my loneliness"
Here he picks up the rose and sings to it as he walks. I feel it’s yet another clue showing that he thinks of Christine as the rose.

Notice how far away the chair is from the mini stage at the left of picture—chair is even facing away from it, as they show by the way Erik sits down. (One thing I noticed, when he walks to take a seat in the chair, his head covers that sun/moon/unity symbol and goes past it, and I wonder if it’s another clue that it relates to him.)

Because when he sits down, we see this:

The chair is now close to the stage, and is turned differently. The red death cape covers the chair and the skull mask he wore in WSS is by mini stage, which seems like another clue that this scene does come after masquerade since we never see the mask before this when they’ve shown the mini stage.
ERIK: Shared in my emptiness
No one would listen
No one but her
Heard as the outcast hears
He smells the rose and sighs, then lays it against his lips and trails it down his chin before setting it on the drawing of Christine in her PONR costume—the blossom on top of her. I feel this is another clue to show her as the rose.

A drawing of what looks like Passarino (Phantom) in costume is also there, and I think this shows that Erik designed all the clothes. He has only just told them they will sing his opera. This last part of what he sings sounds so heartbreaking, his voice trembles and is soft, as if he might cry.
On his mini stage is a Christine doll in PONR standing beside him in costume AND a much taller—like two heads taller (seven feet?)—giant of a figure beside Erik. Only his right arm is lifted and appears wrapped in the curtain—just like the one in I Remember. I think this figure symbolizes the phantom spirit--right arm is trapped. All these main characters—Phantom, Erik, Christine—are to the left of stage, a sign Erik is fully there in this scene as other "left" clues show. Also on the stage a man is bent over with hands to his stomach. But it doesn’t look like Piangi.
Arrows point to the three main characters:

ERIK: "No one would listen
No one but her
Heard as the outcast hears..."
When he sings the last, it shows him as if he’s sitting right by the stage:

But then in the longshot, it shows that he is still in the same chair, which again faces that table, and the stage is far away to his left. Here is another picture of the beginning:

The bust on the organ is blindfolded—both eyes are covered by the black band. The feng-huang phoneix (gold bird) is on the OTHER side of music stand now, not close to Christine mannequin where it was before but farther from it, beside the secret entrance he takes in DOM. Now the red/gold tapestry (king’s colors) is over that third mirror where it was missing before. Something large is wrapped in a white sheet and leans against the wall, blocking the first stairway they walked up in MOTN. The white horse is now missing; the crests are far apart. (a thought--since Masquerade French subtitles hinted Erik & Raoul are brothers, this might show that now there will be even greater discord/war/enmity between them...)

Soft white light comes from high above, and I think that since Christine is above him in the opera house, this is her calling to him. (She often asks him to come into the light—in Spanish subtitles of AOM she sings: “Come to the light. The delay has already been too long”). This is the only place in his lair that I see white light; it is no longer behind the organ. Some feel that Erik is also of the light—but he’s trapped in Phantom’s darkness, and that’s why the white light can’t reach him.
Mirror on far left appears to be leaning to the side or forward but gravity wouldn’t hold it up like that—another mirror is beside it as if the mirrors have been pushed apart The tapestry covering the mirror has fallen away revealing the mirror. (all of this also important to note for later scene, and this could be a sign that Phantom spirit is about to take over. Also because of the reversal of him suddenly in a different place...
They showed no companion book clues (except that it is numerically on the wrong page), and there are no subtitles for this song.
**SOUND SIMILARITIES**
Is sung to tune Learn to be lonely—but since this was actually a deleted scene, and LTBL was added to credits after movie, we can assume that NOWL was the music intended for the entire movie, itself. More on that later…
**Seal My Fate scene summary**
Again, in companion book, before the screenplay starts, they made a point to write: “Scene numbers are consecutive. Where numbers have been missed out scenes have been omitted from the final film edit. Scenes remain in the correct order.”
In next scene—155 B—which companion book says is "continuous" to NOWL (155 A) as they show: 155B. Int. Phantom’s Lair—Continuous. (and remember this scene was out of place in companion book though they stated that none were out of order. So if none are out of order—this is the numerical correct order since scene numbers “are consecutive.”)
The way they show it Seal My Fate is supposed to directly follow NOWL—so we can assume it’s early morning because of next summary with the opera house waking up, and also what he’s singing here. NOWL was late night or early morning of the masquerade—red cape over chair and skull mask beside stage showed this. This scene would be the early morning hours, before the opera house wakes up...
Erik smooths his wig and ties on his black mask. Again, they show his drawing of what looks like the arch of La Feria—in a different place than it had been—(earlier hanging high on the wall near the stage in MOTN). Now it is much lower and by his mirror/wigs. Maybe again showing where he and Christine will go.

Also another drawing is above it that looks like Seville. His white mask lies beside the mirror, not by music box where Meg finds it. He sings:
PHANTOM/ERIK: “Seal my fate tonight –I hate to have to cut the fun short, but the joke’s wearing thin...let the audience in, let my opera begin!”

The Christine doll is now missing from the stage—though it was just there in NOWL. In film companion book he snatched it from the stage before torching it. This shows it was never in his plans to hurt or kill Christine at the cemetery or at any time—BUT the figure of Erik is still on the stage when it burns. I think this shows Phantom plans to take Christine and destroy the king—Erik—meaning he would take complete control over the king, and seize the throne. Erik planned to escape with Christine, according to Don Juan song—he did not plan to kill himself.
In this picture, which I sharpened, he looks directly at Erik doll—and seems to do so throughout this entire scene as stage burns. Phantom craves absolute power now…

Also the figure of him and the “giant” in the red cape with the upraised right hand is now on the RIGHT side of the stage—but in NOWL they were both on the LEFT side of stage, and the giant looked as if his right arm was trapped in curtain in NOWL. Now his right arm is free. I think this shows that, like in “I Remember,” the Phantom was not active—since arm was bound in curtain then. In NOWL, Erik was fully there (not being controlled by Phantom spirit)—doll of him and “giant” were on LEFT. This scene, which in companion book says is “continuous” and follows NOWL now shows “giant” with right arm free—and main figures are on the RIGHT—showing Phantom is now in power here and he is the one singing/doing all this. another thing--in NOWL, this giant doll was to the left of Erik doll; now it is to the right. Also, the Carlotta doll is now bald. (hair means “glory”, beauty—a covering. Lack of hair—no covering; no protection. I also found this on a dream/symbol website: Hair: an ancient symbol for strength and power. Perhaps showing Carlotta will be weakened by the death of Piangi.

**COMPANION BOOK CLUES**
In companion book for this very short scene, many things are underlined and capped. We know now the Phantom is there and in control. Here are the words in companion book underlined and capped:
Without revealing what he looks like underneath, WE SEE THE BLACK WIG secured from the back. THE MASK in place.
Black wig and now black mask could be a clue that this is now phantom. From a sleuther’s new book on symbolism:
masks: "In nonliterate as well as in highly civilized cultures, expressions of the presence of supernatural entities. The person wearing the mask feels internally transformed and takes on temporarily the qualities of the god or demon represented by the mask."
A website on the history of masks and their symbolism: http://maskstore.stores.yahoo.net/historyofmask.html
White is used to characterize a corrupt ruler (Erik was king/white half mask)… a black mask is worn by the villain, who epitomizes violence and brutality. (Phantom/black/false priest) Seems to show that Phantom spirit is the one in control in this scene.
P. 126: He throws one of his many CANDLES into the SMALL STAGE and it bursts into FLAME. The other WAX FIGURES MELT. . .Camera moves into THE MOLTEN FIGURES. . .
I think the reason candles and flame are capped and underlined is to show us to look at them and pay close attention—when we do, we see that abruptly within the same scene the number of candles lit changes, sometimes increasing, sometimes decreasing. The flame could also be about what happens in M. Giry’s tale, etc., also to watch for how many flames are lit. The Molten figures that we are supposed to pay close attention to them, and see the changes from NOWL. This, too, was a closeup...also, I think it could mean that we need to match them to the real players in Don Juan opera, and see just who they seem to represent...
It also says this:
He rises now. Ready for his “PREMIERE”…As he passes his MINIATURE THEATRE weith the MINIATURE SET he has designed for “Don Juan”…He snatches CHRISTINE’S figure into his grasp.
PHANTOM: “Let the audience in!”
He throws one of his many CANDLES into the SMALL STAGE and it bursts into FLAME. The other WAX FIGURES MELT.
Showing again, it was never in the Phantom’s or Erik’s plans to kill or hurt Christine.
**SPANISH SUBTITLES TRANSLATIONS BY PMA**
Seal my fate tonight
The decision is yours alone
I hate to have to cut the fun short
I feel I have to interrupt the fun.
But the joke’s wearing thin
It was starting to bore me.
The decision being his alone—perhaps the Phantom telling the king that he should make the final choice, but he (the phantom) felt the pranks were now boring him –and he's telling the king that he wants to stop it now, and let his opera--his plan--begin. But I’m not sure Erik knew all of what that would entail…
Let the audience in, let my opera begin!
The theatre is going to open, and the performance is going to start. (Phantom's plans)
