I'm probably not going to say anything everyone hasn't already...but i shall try. 8-[
the reason Gerry was such a good Phantom for me was again, essentially in the power and emotion. The pain, anger, love and passion he put into every expression, every movement across the screen, every note, made it completely believable for that 2 and a bit hours I was in the cinema (multiplied by every time I saw it!) It doesn't matter that his voice may not be completely perfect, (Although I thought he did the job just fine), it was the actual PRESENCE which captivated me. I have to say, Michael Crawfords vioce does my head in. It's too quavery and high for me, I really love deep, sensual voices, and that was for me Gerry. (Plus I cant hit high notes, and Gerry was just in my range).

I think Gerry did such an amazing job of expressing a wide range of emotion, and I suppose this is a really odd thing to say, but he made the mask work.

I say this because I've seen some random film versions where the actor only has one emotion, the one the mask portrays, regardless of what the other side of his face is doing. LOL.

Gerry's performance really moved me. I think he deserves a lot of credit for the wonderful character he brought to the big screen, and a lot of the bashing he gets is totally undeserved.

I'd like to shove some of these critics in a cape and a mask (and a fedora too, for the hell of it) and see how THEY do!

well, i'm quite too broke to have been able to see it on-stage, but the movie is plenty enough for me for now. =D and prolly forever.

i thought he was a spectacular actor, and as everyone else said, totally made the character come to life. it's kinda like... when he hurts, the audience feels it. major tugging on the heartstrings!

i was checking on imdb, and they mentioned a few interesting things:

Had the "rock and roll" voice that Andrew Lloyd Webber always wanted to play the Phantom.

Sung in a rock band whilst training to be a lawyer
-=-=-=-

anyway, yeah. i did like his voice a lot. it was really rich and full. personally, i thought it was beautiful.

it was just simply amazing to see the raw intensity and the pure emotion that he portrayed with his voice, his actions, everything.

my two words for this: truly exquisite. =D>

Gerard Butler did for me, what Colin Firth did for Mr Darcy, made his performance the definitive one. As I had not seen anyone in the role of the Phantom before Gerard (unless you count Robert Englund playing it in the horror version of the story)

I know there are a lot of purists up in arms about his portrayal, but I think he was wonderful in it. I didn't have the added maybe for want of a better word bias when I went to see it, as I had never seen it on stage before even though I owned the musical sound track, I also had no idea who Gerard Butler was before seeing it either.

But I have never been to see a film so many times before in my life at the cinema (at home maybe lol) Now I am a convert to GB and I havent looked back since :) :D

Thought I replied, but guess not.

Basically I like his acting; he did make him seem more of a believeable character than the stage Phantom. And his eyes at the end... Plus his singing is just cool. I like the rock star quality. :D There's more, but I want to reserve that in the off chance I actually meet him. Yeah, right, but you never know.

I cryed when his tears were falling down ... he tore my heart open...

It's poignant that the tears fall on the deformed side first.

He really did become the Phantom, I didn't see Gerry up there, I saw Erik...and I felt everything he was feeling, it was incredible.

Quite so. I agree. He's totally separate.
