*****SUMMARY OF “Why Have You Brought Me Here?”*****

Paragraph summary: Everyone runs—in fear. As they’re running, they show the Phantom spirit in the background. Christine sings words relating to him, and we also see another hint of telepathy—that they can speak into each other’s minds. They show the death mask in a different place than it was. Raoul chases her up the rooftop, trying to convince her she’s wrong, and she ignores him, remembering both the Phantom and her Angel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58CVbvqQvww

Afterthe Phantom/Erik swirls his cape upon hanging JB, you will need to slow motion, even frame by frame for what’s coming. Watch Raoul—watch his lips. As he approaches the post where he says, “Are you all right”—he says “Are you” before that post blocks him from view. But his mouth isn’t moving. He says the word “you” in a full rounded way, which would mean he would have to purse his lips somewhat. One of the sleuthers who reads lips said she can tell he’s not speaking these words. I believe he’s saying this in his mind, but I know Christine’s lips don’t move when she says, “Raoul, we’re not safe here!”

If you slow play it you can tell that her mouth hangs open the entire time except when she closes it on the last word, which I think was done to make it harder to catch in normal play and keep plot hidden. She’s speaking to him in her mind, and he can understand her. This is very important for later scene. In my research, I read that people who do this mind-telepathy thing do it when they are overcome or in times of great conflict. This fits for every time Christine does it in movie. What’s important to realize is Raoul can hear her when she does this. Perhaps it’s because of who he is in the hidden plot—which we are about to find out. His “disguise” is as a patron of the opera house—IOW, it’s his cover. But he’s really there for another purpose and he sheds his disguise in next scene...just as pageboy did in Il Muto) He also was the only one who heard the Angel of Music singing through her in TOM...the only one to call out Bravo and not Brava, like everyone else did, and a nobleman would know better. The film was doctored for a reason.

To the left, under the lit arch, as everyone is running around panicked, a cloaked figure at the top of narrow stairs stands and watches, hiding partially behind a wall. As you frame by frame it (zoom if need be) they show eyes that glow white, especially when Raoul comes into view and his head comes near the square post (which appears to be the angle at which the spectre would now fully see him.) The eyes also burn whiter when it shows M. Giry and girls. This is not Erik. Erik is a man and wouldn’t have glowing eyes; also, he is now on the roof, hiding behind the statue, as they show in next scene. I darkened the first two -and the last one is as movie was. Some can see it better at full speed, others at slow mo.

RAOUL: “Why have you brought me here?”

CHRISTINE: “We can't go back there!”

RAOUL: “We must return!”

CHRISTINE: “He'll kill you!” (this really fits, because the spectre’s eyes were very white when Raoul came into his view as if burning in anger.) “His eyes will find us there!”

RAOUL: “Christine, don't say that. . .”

CHRISTINE: “Those eyes that burn!” (This fits with the spectre we just saw, showing exactly who she’s talking about here, and it’s NOT Erik.)

RAOUL: “Don't even think it.”

CHRISTINE: “And if he has to kill a thousand men...” (As she sings this she passes three human skulls sitting to her right. I believe this shows Phantom power—that Phantom did the killing—and also that there were THREE actually killed in movie—(they gypsy, JB, and Piangi)- Also this has something to do with Robert le Diablo, mentioned at beginning of film, and how that opera is also a mask that when uncovered strongly mirrors this movie. I’ll write out a post on that later from what one of our sleuthers found.) I think those under the chandelier escaped being killed. The mob was screaming about tracking down the murderer because Carlotta had just found Piangi. Just my thoughts because of those skulls.)

Image

RAOUL: “Forget this waking nightmare”

CHRISTINE: “The Phantom of the Opera will kill...” (This is the second time she refers to the Phantom of the Opera—she is talking about the evil spirit, though again she may not completely realize the truth about all of it yet. In the companion book after STYDI, it says how Meg saw the spectre of the Phantom lead Christine across the roof, and I feel that even if she was put in a trance at this time, Christine remembered something of what he looked like. Also, in "I Remember," she sings about the shape in the shadows -but Erik was in massively candlelit room and she could see him well. I feel this was the Phantom spirit -spectre - she was referring to.)

As she’s walking fast, she passes a white square under a glass dome—it seems lit—and later we see it in Erik’s bedroom in final lair scene. I’m sure a lot of those other props they pass are important, though we haven’t unmasked them yet. Here’s a picture of the domed white square—upon zooming it appears to be a square castle. As she walks by, it shows the red of her cloak in the opening of what appears to be a door or gateway—the rest of her cloak doesn’t show through this “castle.” Since they later show it in Erik’s lair in the DOM scene, I feel this is important. More on this later.

RAOUL: “This phantom is a fable -Believe me. . .” (At this point, I think that’s what Raoul believes. Like everyone, he thinks it's only some sort of trickster wreaking havoc on the opera house. He’s heard of the Angel of Music, and a memory has started to form, but he doesn’t yet believe in the Phantom.)

CHRISTINE: “...and kill again!”

RAOUL: “There is no Phantom of the Opera!”

CHRISTINE: “My God, who is this man. . .”

RAOUL: “My God, who is this man. . .”

CHRISTINE: “...who hunts to kill?”

RAOUL: “...this mask of death?” (When he sings this, he passes the white death mask—which is suddenly in a different place than when we last saw it but doesn’t have eyes this time. I believe again, being white and a mask—that it’s symbolic of the Phantom. And that it’s the “face of clown” in masquerade song. Because they show it when Raoul sings this, I feel it’s saying it’s the mask of death—Phantom spirit. We also see two other death masks a red one and white one. They have eye slots, but no mouths. The bottom one almost looks as if it has eyes watching. Research shows that these specific masks were thought to have been used on the deceased to prevent the spirit from re-entering the body.

Image

CHRISTINE: “I can't escape from him...” (I believe this is talking about the Phantom spirit here, not Erik.)

RAOUL: “Whose is this voice you hear?”

CHRISTINE: “...I never will!” (she’s talking about the Phantom spirit's voice in her mind here. Since she invited him to “Enter,” at the mirror—and he did.)

RAOUL: “...with every breath?”

BOTH: “And in this labyrinth...", (another word for maze) "...where night is blind..." (where there’s only darkness, no one can see the evil. Also, this could refer to the unspoken rule that the truth is not all it appears to be, and that all must close their eyes to what is truth and be silent. It’s a pretense.)

Notice they go up three staircases—phantom’s number. Also notice the picture of Mozart off to the side—and lit to bring focus to it. Some of Mozart’s operas have elements in it that parallel the POTO, the Magic flute for instance and “Don Giovanni”—otherwise known as Don Juan. Mozart was also a freemason.

Image

BOTH: “...the Phantom of the Opera is here/there inside your/my mind.”

RAOUL: “There is no Phantom of the Opera.”

Christine was the one leading HIM away at first, to protect him. Raoul comes out on the roof ahead of Christine—though she was ahead of him on the stairs. I believe this is to show that he'll now become leader. His true hidden role is appearing (his disguise is being cast aside, IOW, just as the pageboy did in the play. And just as what happened in the play, his Lordship {Erik} isn’t at all happy when he sees the truth of who Raoul really is, which will be shown in next scene.)

In the symbolism chart all the parts of a house had specific meaning--'roof' means shelter. She brought him there because the roof symbolized safety. Once Phantom spirit temporarily left him after murder, Erik sought refuge there too. Some believe that he learned Christine was going there and got there ahead of them.

Phantom spirit knows they went to roof—he saw them (the spectre)—and now they show evidence that he's there. They show THREE gargoyles at edge of roof. All on roof and statue bases are identical--they have what look like bows on top of hats and long mustaches, etc. All except one, which is not identical and wears what looks like a mask similar to the one Erik wore in Masquerade. When a statue wears a mask, we’ve found it to mean that the Phantom spirit is there, spying. See pic:

Take note of Christine’s hair. On the way up the staircases it was bouncing, out of control, wild and free and down. Now it appears pulled back and carefully styled, as if to suggest a childhood innocence, meekness. When it was wild she was take-charge, mature, leading Raoul up the stairs, not stopping, intent on getting them both away. In this scene we see her losing that boldness, becoming like a little girl. Vulnerable. She’s always this way around Raoul.

Notice that she's carrying the rose and her cloak is red (Erik’s color). If she were really ready to release her Angel, she wouldn’t be carrying his rose. Once she put on the cloak in order to escape, she would have left the rose behind if she wanted nothing more to do with him. Not picked it up again. I feel this is proof that her heart bonds are tied to Erik. Even if she’s upset by what she thinks he’s done. At this point, I don’t think she realizes he’s under Phantom spirit when he killed.

CHRISTINE: “Raoul, I've been there, to his world of unending night, to a world where the daylight dissolves into darkness, darkness...” (The white light was not allowed to enter his lair, it stayed outside the gate—but there were candles everywhere, so it was bright. Therefore, a lot of us feel that this is the Phantom spirit she is talking about since he IS the darkness. Throughout the entire time she was there, she didn’t act one bit fearful of any “darkness”—the only time she showed anxiety is when he flew into a rage once she took away his mask.)

”Raoul, I've seen him! Can I ever forget that sight? Can I ever escape from that face? So distorted, deformed, it was hardly a face, in the darkness, darkness” (When she took off the mask, her expression didn’t change. She wasn't frightened until he pushed her down and started raving. We feel that she may be talking about the Phantom spirit here also—the spectre. At this point, she's confused, not sure who her Angel is and who the Phantom is, but her comment about the eyes that burn (and we had just seen the spectre with the burning eyes) shows she's seen the spectre at some point. Whether in dreams or as a memory. So perhaps she's talking about when she saw the Phantom spirit controlling her Angel.)

“But his voice filled my spirit with a strange, sweet sound -in that night there was music in my mind. ...” (Here says “in that night” as if it were the first time she'd heard him and hadn't for the nine years we know she did. In a sense, it was. The first time she’d heard the undiluted Erik/man/music (no Phantom, IOW.) That his voice was both strange and sweet suggests something she’d never known before, strange also being another word for “unfamiliar.”) “And through music my soul began to soar!"

"And I heard as I'd never heard before...” (This shows the strong bond she has to Erik, who is also Music. She is torn. From the way she acts that one night was the best thing that ever happened to her. She’d never heard him sing like he had, never had felt the passion she did -and only for him. It was her first experience with such things, and the night she began to fall in love with her Angel. Up until then he was only a friend, a father, a teacher, a protector. This is all sung in the exact way MOTN was sung.)

RAOUL: “What you heard was a dream and nothing more...” (good ole supportive Raoul. But, to give him credit, this is only his second day at the opera house, so he really doesn’t know all of what’s going on yet.)

CHRISTINE: “Yet in his eyes all the sadness of the world...Those pleading eyes, that both threaten and adore...” (this is obviously her memory of STYDI since it’s sung the way that was; here she sounds more compassionate, showing that is what she felt toward him in STYDI -not fear.)

RAOUL: “Christine, Christine...”

Erik, hidden behind statue: “Christine. . .” (We believe he is singing into her mind, and that’s why Raoul doesn’t respond. HE can’t hear the king—the spirit of music—the Man—yet. Because he hasn’t truly accepted that the Angel of Music exists. In Prima Donna we see him beginning to ponder it, almost as if he's remembering, when he sings, "Christine spoke of an angel..."--but at this point, he's still not fully aware of the king's existence. Because of this he can’t hear him in his mind. He heard him through Christine in TOM, but wasn’t fully aware of it then. Also, Christine looked away from Raoul before Erik sang the last Christine.)

Notice the statues -two are of a Pegasus and the instrument below him is a violin of that time period. Also there is a woman playing a flute. The flute and violin have a big part in this movie—the violin we believe represents the Phantom spirit. The flute represents a calling to someone. Note on Pegasus: story became a favorite theme in Greek art and literature, and in late antiquity Pegasus' soaring flight was interpreted as an allegory of the soul's immortality.

**COMPANION BOOK CLUES**

Two things here. One, they make it a point to say: P. 106:
“CHRISTINE is running through, backstage, terrified. RAOUL runs towards her, she grabs him. She still grasps the PHANTOM’S rose.
And after she sings about her time in the lair--P. 107: CHRISTINE is spellbound by the PHANTOM’S rose. The PHANTOM sees and hears this. He leans back, moved.

If she were in any kind of trance, Erik would not have reacted so strongly to seeing and hearing her actions. He’s seeing how she really feels about him.

**SPANISH SUBTITLE TRANSLATIONS by Promiseme**

R:Why have you brought me here
Why have you come here?
C:We can't go back there
If he finds us
R:We must return
We have to go back
C:He'll kill you
He'll kill you
His eyes will find us there
His eyes will see us
R:Chrisine don't say that
don't say that
C:Those eyes that burn
I feel them burn

From honey—she says she feels them right now, and they just showed the spectre looking at them with burning eyes—so this points to Phantom spirit

R:Don't even think it
Don't think that
C:If he has to kill a thousand men
If he has to kill many more
R:Forget this waking nightmare
Forget this bad dream
C:The Phantom of the opera will kill and kill again
I'm sure that the phantom will see you
R:Believe me,there is no phantom of the opera
Don't speak of the phantom, he doesn't exist
C:My God who is this man, who hunts to kill?
My God who could such a man be, who?
R:This mask of death
My God, who?
C:I can't escape from him, I never will
I can't escape
R:Who is this voice you hear with every breath?
What man?Who? Whose is that voice you hear well?
C:And in this labyrinth, where night is blind
I can't escape from him, I never will; following us perhaps around

The phantom of the opera is there, inside your mind
The phantom of the opera is there, inside you

From honey—this makes it look more that he is a part of her, not just in her mind.

R:There is no phantom of the opera
There is no phantom of the opera
C:Raoul, I've been there, to this world of unending night
I have seen him in his world of darkness
To this world where the daylight dissolves into darkness, darkness
In his nocturnal(dark) world that no one has seen, no one
Raoul, I've seen him
I've seen him
Can I ever forget that sight?
One doesn't forget
Can I escape from that face?
Not his fever or his anxiety
So distorted, deformed, it was hardly a face in that darkness, darkness
When at last it is uncovered, and you see him with his deformed face, that face which freezes the blood, blood
But his voice filled my spirit with a strange sweet sound
But his voice gave to my soul a strange ardor
In that night there was music in my mind
Music was placed in my fragility(fragileness?)
And through music my soul began to soar!
And I flew(soared) in freedom and without pain
And I heard as I'd never heard before
I never heard a better music
R:What you heard was a dream and nothing more
What you heard was a dream; there is no fear
C:Yet in his eyes all the sadness of the world
And in his eyes, the sadness of terror

From honey—sounds as if she’s saying he himself is terrified

Those pleading eyes, that both threaten and adore
In his eyes, there is danger and love

**THE SPOKEN WORD**

In the movie, they broke away from song to speak lines they had sung in the play—sometimes speaking for only a few lines. Here is the connecting link I’ve found with the spoken word—

“Are you all right?” (“you” is Angel of Music--her)
“Raoul, we’re not safe here” (Because of Phantom/Angel of Music, so again is about him—though this wasn’t broken off in song, but rather led to it and wasn't actually spoken but was thought then they led into song. Still, it’s about him.)

WHYBMH
POTO
AOM phrase when Raoul says there is no Phantom

Raoul I’ve Been There
Unique at beginning
MOTN when Christine recalls Phantom’s singing
STYDI when she speaks of his eyes

**MUSICAL ANALYSIS by Phantom’s Star**

Note: I think this is what the sounds stand for.
Flute: a calling
Harp: thinking of Angel (Angel of Music)
Cymbals: Angel is there, or near (brush of cymbals)—loud crash—he is fully there.

1.)Harp – we hear the brush of harp strings as Christine sings “My God, who is this man” and “I can’t escape from him”. Raoul sings “Whose is this voice you hear.”
All this lines refer to the Angel of Music and that they are both thinking of him. Raoul, though, isn’t fully aware yet that it is the Angel of Music but has an idea that it could be that person since he says earlier “Christine spoke of an angel.”

2.)Flute – we hear the flute when Christine sings “who hunts to kill” and then again when Christine sings “I never will” and while Raoul sings “with every breath.” The flute continues as she and Raoul sing “And in this labyrinth where night is blind.” – Angel will always call to Christine (I can’t escape from him, I never will) She’ll never escape from his callings. Was Christine also calling to Angel when he was hunting JB? (reason why we hear a flute on “who hunts to kill”?) Raoul I think is calling to Christine here and is trying to find out who exactly is the voice she hears.

3.)As Christine and Raoul approach the rooftop and sing “The Phantom of the Opera is here/there,” we slightly hear the brushing of the cymbals as the shot switches to the rooftop. Angel is near (as we soon see since he is hiding behind the statue)

4.)Harp – we hear the harp right after Christine says the word “darkness” and after she sings “Raoul, I’ve seen him.” As she continues to sing “it was hardly a face in that darkness, darkness,” the harp starts playing certain notes. Then, as Christine looks at the rose, we hear the soft and angelic brushing of harp strings. We again hear the harp when she sings, “Yet in his eyes all the sadness of the world. Those pleading eyes that both threaten and adore.” She’s thinking about her Angel despite how the darkness frightened her. She also can never forget the way he sang to her in MOTN and how his emotional words effected her in STYDI.

5.)Flute – as Christine sings “and through music my soul began to sour”, it sounds like on the word “soar,” we also hear the sound of the flute. Not positive about this because I can’t tell whether it might just be an echo. If it is a flute, I think Christine would be calling back to her Angel to make her spirit soar.

I don't know if you've mentioned this in previous posts, but after watching the movie for the millionth time tonight I noticed something very interresting during this scene. I noticed that when Raoul sings "There is no Phantom of the Opera"... if you look behind him on the statue--which is I believe, the same statue Erik/Phantom later climbs in AIAOYR-- you can see a skull on the side of it!
picture: http://screenmusings.org/PhantomOfTheOp ... O_0813.htm

You also see it when Christine sings "Raoul, I've been there, to his world of unending night, to a world where the daylight dissolves into darkness, darkness...”
picture: http://screenmusings.org/PhantomOfTheOp ... O_0816.htm

Anyways I thought it was interresting since they show the skull just during those two lines...both of which are talking about the Phantom spirit. And it kinda jumps out at you because the coloring of the skull is different than the statue its on--they want us to notice it! haha

Just thought I'd share my little discovery with the rest of the HP followers :rose:

WOW!! Great catch!! (Love fresh eyes! lol)
And if you'll also notice, something I never saw before - the RIGHT arm of the statue has a ROPE wrapped around it THREE times!
More Phantom spirit symbolism. O:)

I'll have to include that picture and the new observations in the hidden plot summary here.
thanks!
