I guess I got here too late. Everything that should be said has been said. He brings more emotion, depth, masculinity, sexuality, seductivity, and desire to the character. He brought him to life, and showed the raw desire he felt for Christine, which we never really got to see until he came along. His voice held so much emotion in it. And his movements oozed power and sexiness. He did an amazing job bringing in all the aspects I never saw of Erik, but always imagined he had.

I'd like to know what people personally feel makes him such a special Phantom. What do you feel he brings to the role?

To me, Gerry portrays the Phantom with such emotion and presence it really pulls at your heartstrings. His voice is raw, angsty and tortured, conveying the pain that life has dealt him so effectively. Despite his ill-doings, at the end you are left feeling empathy and love for his character.

Gerry has made the Phantom into a real person, as flawed as he is perfect. A man we can all identify with in our own unique ways.

Plus of course, the fact that Gerry oozes sex appeal and has the presence to make any woman go weak at the knees.

I couldn't agree more. And I'd like to add that Gerry's ability to transcend emotion through his beautiful soulful eyes is nothing short of extaordinary. It is definitely one of the most remarkable things about his Phantom...that sheer MELANCHOLY.

phantomsquill wrote:If you didnt' know this about me already, when I saw the film the first time on Jan. 12, I was a 'virgin', so to speak. In fact, I was prepared to *hate* this movie. Then, Emmy won me over at the end of Think of Me and Gerry kept me glued to my seat in POTO and MOTN and on through to the end.

I remember when I first saw the film, I thought, gosh, this part was written for a tenor and yet he's a baritone. The upper range of the part seemed like he was being asked to do too much. Yet, that he could do it all was impressive.

After seeing it the first time, I figured the actor playing the Phantom wasn't actually singing. I was very surprised that they were able to find an actor who did such a good job acting that could sing, as well. I would have *never* guessed he was not a trained singer.

I think Gerry's Erik is all the better for not having that "formal training;. I was a very good violist without having taken a private lesson in my life. I was a section leader. I won a couple of contests. Perfect pitch is innate. Gerry has it. You can't *teach* that.

Anyway, I don't like the Broadway style of singing, anyway. Gerry's singing was a big reason I returned to see the movie...again, and again, and again. :D

When Gerry is walking down the stairs during "Why So Silent?" and he sees Christine, you *know* his heart is pounding in his chest. I have had moments like that. He's having a hard time breathing and you know he doesn't see anyone else in the room.

And Gerry is transformed in this movie, as someone else mentioned. And you can tell, even in the press photos, that when the costume and makeup is on, he's Erik. The expressions on his face, even in those publicity photos, are so in character, it's amazing.

In reading the book, I had a hard time rooting for either Erik or Raoul. Gerry created a Phantom that is balanced. He is sensitive, passionate, angry, murderous, sympathetic, innocent and welll-meaning. He brings out all the shades of gray of the character and shows that he is more than a monster.

Gerry is flat-out brilliant. Every time I see the film or listening to the soundtrack, it gets better. Today I actually skipped to the AIOY reprise because I just can't deal with Raoul anymore. Heh.

And how can you resist a man who will cry when you reject him, then get really pissed, crush a rose, then run up to the top of a rooftop mounted statue and really tell you how he feels? Yeah, you can't.

Great points - I agree with you 100%. I believe Gerry puts more feeling and emotion into the character than on the Broadway shows -- and is more 'human'. I think you can connect better with his character that way.

I have to admit that I didn't know who Gerry was until I saw PotO, but now that I have seen it, I'm in love. He has such a soulful voice and those eyes... :thud: The more I find out about him, the more I'm convinced that he deserves everything he has. Such a sweet humanitarian heart.

I thought that Gerry probably had one of the best personification of Erik I've seen.
In fact, all the actors add their little bit of Erik.
(Claude Raines showed a more-than-slightly impulsive Erik, though soft-spoken; Michael Crawford, a distinguished person who just was like everyone else except for the deformity)

I thought Gerry added the rougher, more furious Erik.
Very...ah...passionate.

( And he's one of the most good-looking erik's I've seen :shower: )

Hey welcome Güera Bella!!! ^_^

I havent seen anything other than the 2004 movie and the one where hes a killer and takes people's skin...
BUT I think Gerry did a GREAT job as Erik.
I have heard MC sing, and although I love his voice, I would perfer to hear Gerry sing anyday. He brings something into the music and performance that you cant find anywhere else. He becomes the character. I cant even see them as the same people! I've tried to find something of Gerry in him, but I cant. All I see is Erik.
Plus he brings so much emotion into the character. I myself am not one to cry for much. The only movies I have ever cried in are Cast Away (when Wilson floated away (sry if that ruined ne thing for ne one...)) and The Passion of the Christ (for obvious reasons). Now after seeing POTO, I can now add that to my list. Even on the first day when I got my soundtrack from the film, I was sitting in my room listening to it full blast, and I couldnt help it! I completely broke down. Gerry brings so much passion to his role you can actually feel what he feels. And thats what I love about him! I love the way he makes me fall in love with the character everytime I see the movie or listen to the soundtrack.
